Early Scouting Report: Louisville Cardnials

Fall camp is off and running at the Carol Soffer Football Training Facility as head coach Mario Cristobal begins his 3rd fall camp at Miami. The 2024 college football season is right around the corner. We are getting ready for the season by previewing each opponent on Miami’s schedule at CT.

For the first time, I will be providing weekly scouting reports on and off for Miami’s upcoming opponent that will include an in-depth look at personnel, advanced stats, scheme background, betting information, series history, program profile, and keys to victory. That is just around the corner.

But it’s never too early to start getting some homework done. We are now pumping out some early scouting reports as we research and take a closer look at the foes on Miami’s schedule.

Louisville’s offense

Look at the numbers from the Cardinals offense posted in 2023.

  • Scoring: 30.7
  • Yards Per Play: 6.2
  • Yards Per Rush: 4.7
  • Yards Per Pass: 8.12
  • Red Zone TD Percentage: 59%

The man who will be the starting quarterback will be Tyler Shough, selected by Brohm to step into the shoes of Jack Plummer, who departed for Louisville after following his head coach from Purdue, is poised to bring a dynamic wide receiver prospect, Caullin Lacy, a transfer from South Alabama, alongside his speedster, Chris Bell. However, it remains to be seen whether Shough can replicate the offensive balance achieved by his predecessor last year, which could impact the passing game.

Chris Bell is expected to serve as one of Shough’s most effective assets in terms of physicality as a receiver, complemented by Ja’Corey Brooks and Caullin Lacy’s contributions of speed.

This season, the Cardinals have strengthened their roster with another formidable group of backs. While they excelled in speed in the previous year, the addition of Miami transfer Donald Chaney, known for his size and physicality.

The pass protecting from the line has to be better though.

Louisville’s defense

Here is a look at their defensive stats from last season

  • Scoring: 21.2
  • Yards Per Play: 5.3
  • Yards Per Rush: 3.3 (Best in ACC)
  • Yards Per Pass: 7.3
  • Team Sacks: 34

Coming in at there defneisve front they are very loaded.

In the upcoming season, they are set to welcome back Ashton Gillotte, an elite All-American pass rusher who had an impressive season, recording 14.5 TFL and 11 of the team’s total of 36 sacks. Opposing him will be Mason Reiger, who has also shown his prowess on the field, amassing five sacks. On the interior, we have Dezmond Tell, who has contributed with two sacks. They also added a transfer from Harvard that will make a factor.

The Cards also return TJ Quinn, the team’s leading tackler, and Stanquan Clark, who showed great potential as a freshman.

The secondary for the Cards will be just fine as they return mainly everyone and they could dominate.

Overview

Brohm successfully led Louisville to the game, leveraging a formidable defensive team, a strategy that is expected to be replicated in 2024. Additionally, the team is set to welcome seventh-year senior Tyler Shough, who will play at the center position. Should Shough maintain his health, the team possesses the capability to once more contend for the top positions in the standings against formidable opponents such as Florida State, Clemson, and Miami.
