FINAL: Miami Overcomes a Slow Start Versus Virginia

The Miami Hurricane’s football teamed overcomes a slow start versus a (2-6) Virginia team.

1st Quarter

• Miami starts the game with the opening possession. The Hurricanes punted the ball after picking up one first down. Virginia responded with a touchdown on its opening drive, a methodical 12-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard run by Mike Hollins. On Miami’s next possession, the Hurricanes drove the ball down to the UVA 36 yard line, but quarterback Tyler Van Dyke threw a pick to Xavier Restrepo on a pass that was under-thrown. 

2nd Quarter

• Miami started the second quarter with the first possession and went three-and-out. With 8:46 remaining in the second quarter, Virginia extended its lead to 10-0 on 22-yard field goal, capping a five-play, 70-yard drive that was boosted by a 64-yard catch and run by slot receiver Malik Washington that took the ball down to the UM 11 yard line. Safety Kamren Kinchens missed a tackle on Washington that would have limited the gain by Washington. Miami responded with a 43-yard drive that was capped by a 47-yard field goal by Andy Borregales with 4:03 remaining in the first half.

Halftime

• QB Tyler Van Dyke completed 6-of-10 passes for 55 yards and one interception. Ajay Allen led Miami’s rushing efforts with 29 yards on eight carries. Xavier Restrepo caught two passes for 29 yards. On defense, James Williams led the Hurricanes with six tackles. Kiko Mauigoa led UM with 2.5 tackles for loss in the first half. Miami’s defense allowed Virginia to total 179 yards in the first half. 

3rd Quarter

• Miami’s defense forced Virginia to go three-and-out to start the second half. Running back Ajay Allen gave Miami a spark on a 26-yard touchdown run in which he hurdled a UVA defensive back and ran into the end-zone to tie the game at 10-10 with 10:44 remaining in the third quarter. Miami’s defense then made a big play with Kamren Kinchens picking off a Tony Muskett pass and returning it for a touchdown to give the Hurricanes a 17-10 lead with 10:37 remaining. UVA responded with a 23-yard field goal by Will Bettridge with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter to cut into Miami’s lead, 17-13. After a Tyler Van Dyke interception gave UVA the ball, the Cavaliers made Miami pay with a touchdown drive that was capped by a ten yard touchdown run by Mike Hollins to give UVA a 20-17 lead with 22 seconds remaining in the quarter.

4th Quarter

• Miami started the fourth quarter facing a third-and-2 situation. Borregales converted a 50-yard field goal with 9:26 remaining in the game to tie things up at 20. Virginia put together a drive that was capped by a 32-yard field goal to take a 23-20 lead with 4:20 remaining in the game. With 1:23 remaining in the game, Andy Borregales connected from 48 yards away to tie it at 23-23.

Overtime

• The game went to overtime with the Hurricanes on defense first. Virginia scored a field goal with the possession. Mark Fletcher ended the game with a touchdown run.

Miami will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, to face the (5-3) NC State Wolfpack on ACCN at 8 p.m. EST.
