Five-star Miami signee Jalil Bethea shines at Hoophall Classic
Jalil Bethea and his little brother Saleem Bethea, 9, listen to the announcement at Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster, Pa. on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023. Bethea, a nationally ranked point guard, selected Miami.

Miami Hurricanes five-star basketball commit Jalil Bethea put on a clinic at the Hoophall Classic.

Nearly at the end of the game Bethea got fouled and he got sent to the freethrow line to shoot 2 shots, Bethea connecting on making both free throws to extend the lead to 73-71 and putting the icing on the cake. Tacking on two also gave Bethea 40 points on the night, and a feeling of satisfaction.

Bethea was named the Most Valuable Player for this team after the win.

When it comes to what type of player Bethea is, he is a defense-first player who thrives when playing in transition. On the offensive side, Bethea is best off the ball, coming off of screens. coach Jim Larranaga has shown so far that athleticism is one of the things he is looking for.

Bethea is a Philadelphia native, and because of this decided to attend Archbishop Wood. His commitment to Miami also had to do with similarities he found between the two schools.

”Just like Archbishop Wood (Miami builds) great guards, and they build great Philly guards, a lot of Philly people that go to Miami they come out, and they do very good, and are successful,” Bethea said.

Wooga Poplar is the most recent example of a Philadelphia guard playing for the University of Miami. The sophomore is in the midst of a break-out season.
