Miami Football: Projecting the Depth Chart For The Miami Hurricanes Quarterbacks Position

It won’t be much longer until Miami officially takes the field to kick off the 2023 season. The Hurricanes are more than likely are going to have a chip on their shoulder after going 5-7 (3-5 ACC) season. The Hurricanes are looking to improve from 2022 and try to be bowl eligible.

Today, we’ll kick things off with the group that’s received some of the most attention this offseason: the quarterbacks:

Here’s how we project Miami’s quarterback room for the 2023 season.

QB1: Tyler Van Dyke, Junior

I believe that Van Dyke will be the starter yet again for the Hurricanes in 2023. Van Dyke started eight games for the Hurricanes in 2022 before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. He went 160-for-253 and 1,844 passing yards with ten touchdowns and five interceptions.

Back in the 2021 season Van Dyke was on fire. He ended the 2021 season with 202-of-324 with having 2,931 passing yards and 25 touchdowns with only six interceptions. And was ACC Rookie of The Year. Hopefully he can recover from that shoulder injury and pick up where he left off in 2021.

At Miami this spring, Van Dyke finished the first half 13-of-19 for 184 yards and a touchdown. And that touchdown pass was a dime to star wide receiver Jacolby George.

Dawson runs a modified version of the Air Raid offense. Expect Tyler Van Dyke to throw deep more often. Dawson will play to Van Dyke’s strengths more often than former offensive coordinator Josh Gattis did last season.

QB2: Jacurri Brown, Sophomore

Brown was Miami’s backup last year, Brown appeared in eight games last season, initially used in quarterback draws before being thrust into the spotlight when starter Tyler Van Dyke went down against Florida State. The Valdosta, Georgia, native made his first career start the following week against Georgia Tech, recording an 85.5 QBR with 136 passing yards and three touchdowns in a 35-14 victory.

In this year’s spring game Brown kind of struggled, missing his first four throws in the spring game. He finished with just 55 yards on 5-of-11 completions. The performance left many with the understanding that Brown will need more time to develop on his game. But i will still put him the second string cause of experience.

Brown added 54 carries for 223 yards rushing in 2022. Expect Brown to be utilized by Dawson in short yardage in 2023. Brown completed 60.0 percent of his passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in 2022. Brown will need to improve his accuracy as the backup to Van Dyke in 2023.

QB3: Emory Williams, Freshman

Williams is the newest addition to the quarterbacks for the 2023 season, Williams committed to Miami in June. Emory has a strong arm and threw for 2,049 yards with 21 touchdowns and four interceptions at Milton (FL) High School.

Williams played in the 2023 spring game and he completed all four of his pass attempts in the first half for 42 yards and added the 79-yard TD pass to Joseph in the second half of the spring game.

Williams is tall and thin at 6-foot-4, 190-pounds. He could stand to add weight to his lithe frame, which will help him withstand hits in the pocket and hopefully help to improve his arm strength moving forward.
