Miami Womens Soccer Ties 1-1 Against Florida Atlantic
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team earned a 1-1 tie on the road against Florida Atlantic Sunday evening.
“I am proud of the character that our team showed tonight,” said Head Coach Ken Masuhr. “We settled into a good rhythm early and were rewarded with a goal off of a set piece. We talk every day about margins and the details that give us the results we are pushing for, so it was nice to see that focus pay off. We will prepare to play another NCAA Tournament team at Princeton this week. We have a lot of support from the Northeast, so we are looking forward to playing in front of a great crowd.”
The Canes came out with high intensity from the first whistle and showcased an impressive offensive attack throughout the first half.
After a number of quality opportunities, Giovana Canali broke through with the first goal of her collegiate career in the 37th minute of the first half on a well executed set piece. Tori Grambo played a dangerous ball in off a corner kick that found the foot of Grace Hurren. Hurren played a beautiful one touch pass to Canali, and Canali did the rest.
The Canes maintained the one-goal advantage heading into halftime.
Florida Atlantic battled back and responded early in the second half, as Olivia Bori scored a goal in the 57th minute to even the match at one goal apiece.
Miami showed excellent poise following the FAU goal, continuing to press their attack. The Canes put intense pressure on the FAU back line throughout the remainder of the match, creating numerous opportunities that nearly found the back of the net.
Despite the strong offensive performance from Miami, they were unable to score a goal and went on to earn the tie.
Miami tallied nine total shots, seven of which were on goal, while FAU managed six total shots, of which were on target.
The Canes will return to the field this Saturday, as they are set to travel to New Jersey to face Princeton at 7 p.m.
