Recruiter or Coach, Can Mario Excel at Both?

Recruiter or Coach, Can Mario Excel at Both?

When it comes to knowing the ins and out of college football recruiting, it’s hard to find anyone who knows more than Mike Farrell. An OG in the recruiting game, Farrell was national recruiting director for Rivals for over 20 years, now he has his own platform, Mike Farrell Sports.

Earlier this month, Kyle Golik or Mike Farrell Sports listed five college football head coaches who are better recruiters than they are coaches and the Head Cane was one of them. I have spent some time over the last couple weeks dissecting this and what I think of it.

Along with Mario Cristobal, Golik also lists Penn States James Franklin, Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss, Texas Longhorn coach Steve Sarkisian and Jimbo Fisher of Texas A & M. Initially, being accompanied with this group of coaches isn’t ideally where you want to be because this is a group who is thought of as under achievers. The more I thought about it though, this group isn’t all that bad.

Obviously we want our coach to be a member of the national title coaches, but there is only give current head coaches in College Football as national champions. One of those actually come from the aforementioned group in Jimbo Fisher as he is joined by Dabo Swinney, the Nicktator Nick Saban, Kirby Smart and Mack Brown as  current coaches with a ring as a head coach.

I’m in the boat if I would rather be great at something than good at multiple things but elite at none. It is no doubt that Mario is a top recruiter nationally and considered great at that aspect. I agree his coaching resume to this point might not be up to the standard as his recruiting but I believe it will get there. Rome wasn’t built in a day and nobody ever wins a national title without the Jimmies and Joes. Kirby Smart at Georgia was widely considered a lame duck coach until he finally broke through with a National

Title after stacking great recruiting class upon great recruiting class. I believe that is what we are seeing with Mario, let’s have this conversation again in 2030, I feel that he will have a national title by then.

At Miami, this program was built on coaches who were great at both in Howard and Jimmy. However, let’s not forget Butch Davis is considered a legend of the 305 now and a fan favorite for the roster he recruited and assembled at the end of the 20th century. The greatness is now remembered but at the beginning of Davis tenure he was considered an atrocious in game coach, but that isn’t how he is remembered now. Cristobal has been a national champion as a player, as an assistant coach so he knows what a national champion looks like and he will be a national champion head coach sooner than later.
