Talk CanesToday: A Thursday Night Without Football

Welcome to another one of these days Talk CanesTodays in the fall mark the unofficial start to the weekend. The sports world receives an appetizer in the form of football.

The Amazon Prime broadcasts were mocked by many. Who wants to watch the Bears play the Commanders? What kind of sicko would choose to watch the Chargers give up 63 points to the Raiders? Me, I’m that sicko and I know there are plenty of others out there that are longing for football tonight, no matter how bad it may be.

We are left without a night of football. One final weekend awaits with two week 18 games on Saturday, followed by a full 14-game slate on Sunday. Until then, here is what else is happening around the Miami Hurricanes athletic sports.

Canes Stay undefeated At Home by Beating No. 16 Clemson Tigers

The Hurricanes take down the No. 16 ranked Clemson Tigers in a 95-82 shootout game, Kyshawn George’s braids help us with this win.

Three Miami Hurricanes players got past 20 points against the Tigers tonight, those players were Nijel Pack with (25), Norchad Omier (23), and Matthew Cleveland with 23 points. Coming up behind them is a stud SF freshman Kyshawn George with him accomplishing 12 points all of his points came from the first half he started to quiet down in the second half cause of Clemson making adjustments.

As a team, Miami shot a combined 53.0 percent from the field despite a sloppy first half. The ‘Canes only turned the ball over 8 times against the Tigers defense tonight. The Tigers finished just 46 percent from the floor and a poor 11-30 from long range.

At the intermission, Clemson was up 41-35 behind a combined Kyshawn George (12) and Matthew Cleveland (9). Cleveland also chipped in seven points and two rebounds in the first half of action as UM shot just under 50 percent from the field and over 40 percent from long range. On the other end, Clemson was held to just 42.9 percent overall shooting at the midway point.

Out of the halftime break, Miami ended up pulling away, when it was all said and done, the ‘Canes finished with a shooting split of 53 percent from the field, 46 percent (11-24) from deep, and 93 percent (14-15) from the free-throw line.

Former Hurricane David Njoku Selected to Pro Bowl

Josh Allen is back where he belongs, in the Pro Bowl. On Wednesday the NFL released its selections for the AFC and NFC teams. The Cleveland Brown earned a spot as a tight end for the AFC.

The former Miami Hurricane is having a career year as he plays for the Browns.

David Njoku leads the team with 81 receptions this season. Denzel Ward has recorded two interceptions and 11 passes defensed to make his third NFL Pro Bowl.

Njoku was voted to his first Pro Bowl of his seven-year career, a fitting way to cap off what’s been a career-best season for the 2017 first-round pick — he’s caught a career-best 882 receiving yards and six touchdowns and has been a key weapon in the resurgence of QB Joe Flacco, who’s eclipsed 100 passing yards to Njoku in two of the last three games.

Kyshawn George shined in big time game against Clemson

George started out the first half hot in the first half against the Clemson Tigers, in the first half George was leading the Miami Hurricanes stats in scoring with him having 12 points for three rebounds, he ended up finishing with 12 If he played like he did tonight he will have a very bright and professional future ahead of him.

George had to step into Wooga Poplar’s role after Wooga had gone down with a ankle injury against North Florida. And George took that advantage.

Jon Rothstein said on Twitter: “You can say George is a wildcard he was terrific tonight in place of Wooga Poplar. He is a name to monitor moving forward in Miami.

CBK Report Names Matthew Cleveland a Top 30 Small Forward in MBB

Last night Cleveland had a 24-point game against the No. 16 ranked team in the country the Clemson Tigers, Cleveland also had four rebounds and four assist to go with his 20-point game.

In Miami’s 13 games of the season, Cleveland has been one of the main reasons for the team’s successful 11-2 start. Cleveland recorded a 16-point double-double against N.J.I.T., followed by a fantastic defensive effort against UCF that included three steals and two blocked shots.

Cleveland’s game makes him one of the most fascinating players to watch in the country. At his size, he can practically play any role on the court. Cleveland uses his size to attack downhill quickly, and once he decides to rise up to the rim, it is not so wise to jump with him.

Cleveland’s length and quickness make him an elite defender that can guard all five positions, something Miami has been missing the past two years. The versatility of Cleveland as a positionless defender and his rebounding ability are vital for the Hurricanes as the season progresses.
