Talk CanesToday: Miami basketball takes over the state

For the first time since the fall, the in-season Miami football news cycle is over. Excluding Monday’s national championship matchup between No. 1 Michigan and No. 2 Washington, bowl season is over and teams are now scrambling to rebuild their rosters through the transfer portal — now closed for new additions through April. What you see is what you get in the pool of chaos. Beyond that, though, the wait begins until spring ball with a quick signing period sprinkled in starting Feb. 7. No more game prep, press conferences or Mario Cristobal post game show.

On the flip side, basketball season is officially full steam ahead, the Canes wrapping up the non-conference slate and entering the beast that is ACC play. It started up with a win over the No. 16 ranked Clemson Tigers, here Saturday Miami will take a road trip to Wake Forest to play the Demon Deacons, a projected NCAA Tournament team and a Quad opportunity for Miami.

Canes prepare for the Demon Deacons

It’s a real test, one that hits the Canes in some areas.

The Deamon Deacons bring an 10-3 record when Miami will play them on Saturday. Three of those losses, to Georgia, Utah and LSU. Their best player is senior guard Huntter Sallis, who averages 18.4 points per game. He’s scored 61 points combined in the last three games.

If we are being honest Wake Forest is a good-looking team Miami might struggle in this game especially cause SG Wooga Poplar is out, now that was not a problem against Clemson, but Wake Forest plays a whole lot different in their guard spots.

Kyshawn George shined in big time game against Clemson

George started out the first half hot in the first half against the Clemson Tigers, in the first half George was leading the Miami Hurricanes stats in scoring with him having 12 points for three rebounds, he ended up finishing with 12 If he played like he did tonight he will have a very bright and professional future ahead of him.

George had to step into Wooga Poplar’s role after Wooga had gone down with a ankle injury against North Florida. And George took that advantage.

Jon Rothstein said on Twitter: “You can say George is a wildcard he was terrific tonight in place of Wooga Poplar. He is a name to monitor moving forward in Miami.

Miami Up To No. 8 Seed?

In Lunardi’s latest Bracketology update from Monday morning, he bumped up Miami in the pecking order. Miami is now a No. 9 seed in the projected field for the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Lunardi has the Hurricanes taking on No. 8 seed Nevada Wolfpack in Omaha as part of the South (Dallas) Region. UM is in a region that includes No. 1 seed Houston and No. 2 seed Clemson (yes, Clemson).

In this scenario, a win for Miami in the first round would set up a second-round matchup against the winner of No. 1 seed Houston and No. 16 seed UT Martin/So. Dakota State.
