Four Takeaways: From Mario Cristobal’s Interview on the Joe Rose Show

The #1 morning show in Miami, The Joe Rose Show was broadcasting live in Coral Gables this morning. Joe Rose and his co-workers were on campus to watch UM practice as they got pads out today. Prior to practice, Joe Rose spoke with Mario Cristobal and Alex Mirabal. There is a lot of good info from the interview but here are four takeaways I had.

The entire interview is available on the Audacy app.

Here are Four takeaways I got from that show today.

Four Takeaways

Mario Cristobal speaks highly on the quarterbacks – The show started out by Joe Rose asking about Cam Ward and how are the Hurricanes quarterbacks doing, and here is what coach Cristobal had to say.

“It’s a good, it’s a really good and talented quarterback room they are competitors, they support each other they are getting after it, and they understand every rep matters, decision have to be made at every point and time. And they have done nothing but exceed exceptions.” said Cristobal.

Ruben Bain is doing Ruben Bain stuff – Joe Rose said to Mario that the defensive line is more of a top priority coming into this season. When he mentioned that Mario Cristobal spoke highly on Rueben Bain.

“We found some talented guys in high school, there being tutored by the best. The strength and condition program is responsible for developing those body so that they can play early, and I think Rueben Bain did that last year, he gained 15 pounds over the course of six months, he increased his bunch press by 125 pounds, he ends up being a freshman All-American.” said Cristobal

Cristobal is comfortable on safety position even with some top safeties going to draft – Joe Rose wanted to talk about some positions that Mario got hit hard in the safety room that got two safeties in the NFL Draft, and he asked Mario “How do you feel about the safety position?” He also brought in the fact that Zaquan Patterson been balling out and talked on his school, and this is what Cristobal had to say.

“Chaminade-Madonna they are trained well, they are coached hard, you see Damion Jones he does a great job over there with those guys, they been in big games so they don’t shy away from anything. You look at guys like Jaden Harris he has been here for a couple of years, his time is NOW, he is a really good athlete he is really good he’s smart he’s tough, guys like Markeith Williams he’s bn here you know like Kaleb Spencer, has been here for a year now, and then we go to the portal and both Savion and Riley and Mishael Powell have been exceptional since they have been here. So, the competition and the level of play we have been very pleased with and they learned the system rather quickly.” said coach Cristobal.

Cristobal addressed other issues with Rose – Freshman receivers JoJo Trader and Ny Carr “have come in and shown they can make some plays,” Cristobal said. “Both really explosive, have great body control. When the ball is in the air, they can contort themselves and find a way to come up with it. They understand leverage, releases.
