Today on CT: What did you miss from day 1 from the ACC Media Days

Things are winding down as the day one of the ACC Media Day has been complete today and if you did miss it cause you had work or just slept in which I can completely understand than CanesToday has you guys covered. We will also be on task tomorrow and the rest of the Media Days.

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips gives Miami and the rest of the ACC high praise

Phillips said what makes the conference exciting starts with its coaches. There is a collection of talented coaches in the league that means players are both going to be developed and used as well as possible by those excellent coaches.

“All of these are the most of any conference,” Jim Phillips said. “We have elite coaching leadership, six ACC head coaches named to the 2024 Dodd Trophy pre-season watch list. No conference has more. Two of the three active coaches in the country to win a national title reside here in the ACC: Mack Brown and Dabo Swinney. The combination of our proven veteran coaches combined with our dynamic young coaches is incredibly powerful.”

“The ACC is the conference of quarterbacks. 13 enter the season with over 20 career touchdown passes and 3500 career passing yards. Eight quarterbacks are projected to start week one in the 2024 NFL season; 25% of NFL teams,” Phillips said.

“And since 2018, at least one quarterback has been drafted in the first round in five different drafts, the only conference that can state that claim. ACC football has the nation’s top returning passer and receiver in yards per game last year in Cam Ward of Miami and Caullin Lacy of Louisville. Plus the second returning rusher in Omarion Hampton from North Carolina.” according to On3.

Jim Phillips on lawsuit regarding FSU and Clemson

Pretty sure we all saw this coming as we guess it on our five storylines the media will ask at the ACC Media Days and ACC commissioner Jim Phillips responded.

“I can state that we will fight to protect the ACC and our members for as long as it takes. We are confident in this league and that will remain a premier conference in college athletics for the long term future.” said Jim to a questions on the lawsuit regarding Florida State and Clemson.

Last week Matt Hayes on a radio show said this: “Georgia was one of the best four teams (in the nation) and didn’t get in (the Playoff). But you didn’t see us [SEC] jumping up and down and complaining and hanging national championship banners.”

Based on that comment it’s hard to imagine Florida State joining the SEC in the future. This stems back to reports claiming both the SEC and Big Ten view the Seminoles as a “concerning addition,” reported by Brett McMurphy of The Action Network.

Florida State is ready for return as DJ Uiagalelei takes over

Expectations for Florida State’s offense will always be extremely high as long as Mike Norvell is on the sidelines. The former Memphis head coach has led the Noles to a 13-1 team last year and expecting more from this upcoming year.

But despite being with the Seminoles for around six months, FSU’s new signal caller earned the respect of his teammates and coaches relatively quickly. Which head coach Mike Norvelldiscussed Monday at ACC Media Days

“You see his humility to work, his humility to come be a part of it. It’s never been about him coming into this program and it’s something I think he’s earned the respect his teammates,” Norvell said. “Because he’s jumped in from day one and it’s just always been about the work and it’s been about the investment to build those relationships.”

“And to show that even this is a new language and for the last three years had three new languages he’s had to learn, but you see that what he’s willing to pour in to be able to understand that and then to be able to also help those that are around them. It’s really, really impressive.”

“I think it’s both, and really for us to get a better sense of who he is and some of the things — you can sit there and watch film and you can see a result of the play, but it’s also the process of how you get to the result,” Norvell explained. “And for him, I want this to be the best year of his life and to take everything that he’s gone through, to be able to come together with this team, the individuals that are around it, what we’re asking them to do as a coaching staff and for him to go out there and to be able to execute at the highest of levels.”

Jim Philips makes funny joke

When Jim Phillips had his moment speaking to the media as he made sure to make the room laugh and funny as he thru a funny shot at the Chicago Cubs series against the Baltimore Orioles.

“It’s good to see you, Josh,” Jim Phillips said. “I just want to say this. Josh is a really big Baltimore Orioles fan and he was like crushing me with a text. He was going to see the Cubs play, Chicago Cubs play at Camden Yards in Baltimore. Cubs aren’t having a great season. The Orioles are certainly having a great season. Then I haven’t heard from him until this morning.”
