What is best when Snatching a QB out of the Portal

The transfer portal is jumping more than the Wisconsin students at Camp Randall. Officially opening yesterday there is over 1200 players in the portal. It’s no secret Miami is going to have high roster turnover again and use the portal to their advantage, one position in particular is at quarterback.

Knowing the Canes are going to take at least one maybe multiple QB out of the portal, got me thinking, which is the best ones to set our target on?

The hot names in the portal are Will Rodgers, Will Howard, Cam Ward and so on but it leads me to ask why? These guys haven’t won anything, they put up some decent numbers on mediocre teams and they have one year of eligibility left. I have thought about the portal and I see you really have three options to go.

1.) Transfer Quarterback who has been around and has one year left but has played many snaps

2.) Transfer Quarterback with multi – years left who has maybe started one year

3.) Transfer Quarterback who is a former highly rated recruit that hasn’t really played but has been stuck in a log jam at their respective school.

I might be in the minority and will probably go against what Miami chooses to do, but I don’t want the transfer quarterback with one year left from this 8-4 and 9-3 schools. If I had my druthers I am going after Donte Moore first, he has two years left at minimum and multi – years but even he is going against what I would like to look at as well. I think a transfer QB who is a former 4-5 star who is down the depth chart at a premier program would be good to look at.

Brock Vandergriff comes to mind, he was a 5 star went to UGA but has been pushed down as he and Beck were waiting their turn behind Bennett and Beck was to go pro but isn’t now and Vandergriff is now looking for a new home. I would rather take a chance on him, or someone off the Alabama roster like Ty Simpson if he enters the portal than one of these guys like Will Howard.

I am sure these statistics will change as the playoff expands but I have looked back at the playoffs over the last five years and with the high rate of transfers, the QB transfer doesn’t seem to translate to wins a lot and especially the QB transfer who went mediocre before. Other positions yes you can get plug and play guys to high success but not the QB position.

These numbers below show not one transfer QB who was the starter at their previous school when they left has come in and taken their team to the playoffs in year one. Jalen Hurts was starter but benched is the only one that could really make an argument for this, the other transfer QB’s who took teams to playoffs were on the bench at their previous schools and also didn’t do it in year one at new school.
