Miami basketball transfer portal watch list

Miami wrapped up their season with a losing record and not even a appearance in the NIT tournament, as the Hurricanes are now looking to rebuild this roster.

The Miami Hurricanes have three freshman set to arrive here in Coral Gables as part of the 2024 recruiting class in Jalil Bethea, Isaiah Johnson, and Austin Swartz.

While the Hurricanes are rebuilding Miami and Jim Larranaga already added tow big pieces to the squad in Virginia Tech big man Lynn Kidd and East Carolina big man Brandon Johnson.

Here are some names to watch.

G Javon Small, Oklahoma State

Small is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound guard with one year of eligibility. He’s ranked No. 9 among all players in the transfer portal and No. 1 among point guards, according to 247 Sports.

On Wednesday it has been informed that he took an official visit to Miami.

As a junior in 2023-24 at Oklahoma State, Small averaged 15.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.0 steals in 33 minutes per game. He started 31 games for the 12-20 Cowboys, who fired coach Mike Boynton after his seventh season. Small shot 44.1% from the field, 37.4% from 3-point range on 5.3 attempts per game and 86.6% at the free throw line. He received an All-Big 12 honorable mention.

G Tre Dinkins, Canisius

Lets just get straight to the point the Hurricanes need about everything on this roster and that goes for another guard wether that is coming off of the bench or even competing for the starting role spot, but Canisius point guard transfer The Dinkins might give Nijel Pack a run for his money.

Dinkins is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound guard who made the All-MAAC third team as a junior in 2023-24. Playing 32 games with 30 starts, he averaged 15.4 points, 3.6 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game while shooting 41% from the field, 36.5% from 3-point range and 78.6% at the free throw line.

On a 14-18 Canisius team, Dinkins finished as leader in points, assists and 3-point shooting, making 85-of-233 attempts. He enters the transfer portal with one year of remaining eligibility.

G Arturo Dean, FIU

Arturo Dean led the country in steals at 3.4 per game. After winning Conference USA Rookie of the Year last season, he earned first-team All-Defense and third-team All-League honors. Dean averaged 13.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. He is a sophomore.

Miami has not showed any contact with him but since he is in the Miami area I hope Jim Larranaga and the Hurricanes coaching staff will keep him in his home place.

F Amari Williams, Drexel

The Hurricanes already got 2 forwards in the portal, so I mean heck why not go get another. Amari Williams of Drexel may be the top dog at the rim. The 6-foot-10 dude, also like McDaniel, is probably one of the top 10 most heavily-pursued players in the transfer portal. Again, Miami is in the hunt and there’s reason to believe they’re seriously in consideration, even if it won’t be easy.

Small began his career with two seasons at East Carolina before transferring to Oklahoma State. He played just 9.2 minutes per game in 16 appearances as a freshman in 2021-22, then had a breakout sophomore campaign in 2022-23.

Small was averaging 15.8 points, 5.6 assists and 4.8 rebounds across 18 games before suffering a season-ending leg injury. Playing 34.7 minutes per game, Small shot 39.7% from the field, 33.3% from 3-point range on six attempts per game and 85.4% from the free throw line.
