Talk CanesToday: It Was A Good Week For Miami

Good morning Hurricanes family we are waking up bright and early to welcome the new Miami Hurricanes football commits that committed over the weekend, the NFL Draft wrapped up Saturday and the Hurricanes basketball team got themselves a gem in the portal, we got a lot to get to so stay tuned.

But before we do that lets get into some Baseball recap over the weekend were the Hurricanes played the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Miami Baseball Falls To Georgia Tech in Series Finale

The Yellow Jackets tallied nine extra-base hits, including four home runs to secure the series.

In the defeat, Miami (19-24, 8-16 ACC) used six different pitchers, as starter Herick Hernandez (3-5) was charged with the loss after surrendering six runs in 2 1/3 frames.

Fifth-year infielder JD Urso delivered the lone hit for the Hurricanes with a solo shot to make it a 2-1 game in the third.

Georgia Tech starter Tate McKee (4-3) struck out nine batters across five innings of one-run baseball to earn the win.

Up next, Miami opens a four-game homestand Thursday at Mark Light Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Damien Martinez Transfers To Miami

Over the weekend the Hurricanes just had the bets running back in the portal to come down for a visit at Miami and when he was on his visit he told the Hurricanes coaching staff that he is coming to Miami.

The Hurricanes have struggled to maintain a healthy running back room in each of the last two years but with Miami adding Martinez say if he does go down Miami will have some experienced backs to back him up.

Martines had an amazing true freshman season where he ran for 982 yards and seven touchdowns. He then took it up another notch last season as a sophomore, running for 1,185 yards and nine touchdowns. Those 1,185 yards was enough for 24th best in the country. He was also involved in the passing game, catching 11 passes for an additional 126 yards.

Martinez hit the ground running and had been a productive player for Oregon State for two seasons.

Miami Adds Louisville LB Jaylin Alderman

During his true freshman season in 2021, he delivered one of the most exciting moments of the year in Louisville’s win over UCF. With 25 seconds left and the game tied at 35, the Valdosta, Ga. native caught an interception off a tipped pass, and took it 66 yards for the game-winning pick-six. He finished that season with 16 tackles in 13 games.

His most productive game came against Boston College on Sept. 23, when he registered nine tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack. Alderman totaled at least half a tackle for loss in seven different games.

During the ACC Championship game against potential playoff contender Florida State, Alderman was effective with six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and half a sack.

This is a huge win for the Hurricanes coaching staff, I want everybody to welcome him to Miami in the comments, but I did wish the Hurricanes went for a different position.

Marshall transfer Dyoni Hill cornerback commits to Miami

Hill started his official visit to Miami this weekend, and committed on his visit.

Hill had 55 tackles 1.0 one tackle for loss, one interception, 10 passes defended and one forced fumble in 2023. Hill played two seasons at Marshall under current Miami defensive coordinator Lance Guidry. Miami signed former Marshall edge rusher Elijah Alston as a transfer during the 2024 offseason.

Hill was the 1,606th prospect, 142nd CB and 211th player in Florida out of Gainesville in the 2021 class.

In 2023, Hill ranked eighth amongst the Sun Belt Conference in passes defended. The next step for the soon-to-be junior cornerback is to begin turning those defended passes into interceptions.

Houston WR transfer Sam Brown commits to Miami

This is a very good fit for him, he is very familiar with Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, Brown played his first season at Houston in a Shannon Dawson coordinated offense after transferring in from West Virginia. That season, the 6-foot-2, 195-pounder posted 41 catches for 471 yards and four touchdowns.

Another reason why he could land at Miami is that Cam Ward and Brown’s connection if very nice, incase you have missed it Ward went back to his home town to work on his passing skills before he takes he field in the Fall when the Hurricanes travel to Gainesville, but while he was up their at Houston training he was throwing dots to Sam Brown. Miami Basketball Gets Superstar Guard Commit

Jalen Blackmon was one of the nation’s top scorers at Stetson in 2023-24, and after entering the transfer portal and hearing from multiple teams he decided to transfer to Miami.

Blackmon, a 6-foot-3 guard with one year of eligibility, has familial ties to Indiana. His older brother, James Blackmon Jr., played under former Indiana coach Tom Crean from 2014-17. But somehow the Hoosiers did not make it to his top 5, but they did contact him.

As a junior at Stetson in 2023-24, Jalen Blackmon averaged 21.8 points, which ranks 14th in the nation. He shot 38.1% from the 3-point line on 8.3 attempts per game, putting him 12th in the NCAA and second in the Atlantic Sun Conference with 110 3-pointers made. Blackmon was named to All-Atlantic Sun first team, adding 2.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 90.7% from the free throw line.
